I really liked the setting; fascinating time and place. I liked the Su Lin character; can talk to all levels of society. But the ending was disappointing. She didn’t use any of her strengths to solve the mystery. The whole ending was kind of odd with faulty logic.
The ending was kind of jolting. Everything went from very calm to a frenzy. I did enjoy reading it. I liked the writing and Su Lin character. I liked the humor and the view into a world I didn’t know anything about. But the mystery part was disappointing.
I really liked the Su Lin character. Really authentic set up for the story in Singapore. Liked the writing. But the mystery was bad.
I enjoyed it. Light, evenly flowing. I liked the Su Lin’s commentary of British culture.
I liked about 80% of the book. The writing, the time and sense of place, the Sulin character. But the end just didn’t flow. I didn’t like that it took Su Lin so long to figure things out. I expected more from her!
I really liked that a modern author gave such an accurate representation of time and place without judging it. I liked the characters and Su Lin’s voice.
A little credulous that Su Li had trouble putting together all the pieces of the puzzle. But a fun read.
I liked the sense of time and place, Su Lin’s family, and the food descriptions. Mystery was not great, but it was really about setting up the characters.
I liked the pace. The sense of place and descriptions of the food were great. Surprised that Su Lin didn’t figure out the mystery.
I enjoyed it. Makes sense that Su Lin didn’t figure out the mystery because culturally it makes sense that she couldn’t believe who did it. I liked the cultural aspects of the story.
