The Late Show

By Michael Connelly

Group Reviews/Comments:

The ambiguities in Renee’s character are purposeful I think. I liked the reality and how she had to navigate all kinds of crap!

Easy, enjoyable read. But it didn’t blow my mind. Not unlike other male detectives we’ve read. She’s good at her job, makes plans, has credibility. I liked the writing. Connelly drops in super modern things with very modern perspectives. Tells a story and makes you think.

I loved this book. Nailed the sense of place. Great pacing.

I liked how Ballard just made the best of a situation. Tried her best to stick to the rules, do a good job. I admired her. I liked that she wants to finish the cases.

I could visually see where all this happened. I really liked this book.

I really like the way he writes. Authentic, especially about the political aspects of policing. He made Renee very real to me.

I liked it for plot and procedural aspects and that there were 2 cases. I didn’t like Renee. I didn’t like how she handled things. There was no real solving of the mystery with Trent–no proof, same with other cases. No motivation, no background.

I forgot how much I like his writing. Dry at first but pacing picked up. I had trouble dealing with Renee’s moral compass–hard to know her rationale for making decisions. I didn’t understand her as a character.

The bad cops motivation was unclear.

I liked it a lot. I wasn’t buying the fact that Renee was homeless–it didn’t seem plausible. But I liked that Renee respected transgender woman when a lot of the men didn’t. I found the “cop speak” hard to follow.

I really enjoyed it. The story and characters were compelling and I liked how Renee dealt with the trans character. Writing on the dry side.

I liked the book it had a lot to offer. Classic plot line. Would have liked more on Renee’s partner. I liked the police procedural aspect. And I liked the “dry” writing. Having 2 investigations was interesting.

I really liked it. I liked the idea of “the late show” and how different it is than normal policing.

Loved the pace and enjoyed the mystery. I liked the procedural part. The author can do this without it being dry and boring. Gross in some parts (but to be expected!). Why don’t I read this author more?

So good. I liked the Renee character so much I read the next 2 books!

Couldn’t get into it. Love Connelly’s other stuff. He just can’t write women. Wasn’t from a woman’s point of view. I was never drawn in by who she was.

Didn’t like it much. Flat. Like a bad TV show. I didn’t finish it. The woman didn’t seem real.

I started it with trepidation–I have been avoiding gritty books. But so glad I read it. I liked how Renee was gradually introduced. Seemed fresh. I liked the use of lingo. All the procedural stuff really interesting.
