The Scholar (Cormac Reilly, #2)The Scholar by Dervla McTiernan
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Dervla McTiernan has followed her first novel, The Ruin, with an excellent installment in what I hope will be a lengthy series.

A police procedural with Galway, Ireland as the backdrop. We get a bit of everything here, and it’s all well done. The politics between police administration and wealthy citizens, as well as the politics within the unit. A peek into the personal lives of our two main detectives, Cormac and Carrie. Well fleshed out secondary characters, and enough fodder for more stories to come.

The murder mystery itself was credible and well executed. And these days, I’m always appreciative when authors avoid unnecessary gore and terror and doesn’t fall back on the serial killer trope..

Lots of suspense, and a real page turner–finished it in two days.
