In The Blood
Summary:
Two hundred years ago a loyalist family fled to England to escape the American War of Independence and seemingly vanished into thin air. American genealogist Jefferson Tayte is hired to find out what happened, but it soon becomes apparent that a calculated killer is out to stop him.
In the Blood combines a centuries-old mystery with a present-day thriller that brings two people from opposite sides of the Atlantic together to uncover a series of carefully hidden crimes. Tayte’s research centres around the tragic life of a young Cornish girl, a writing box, and the discovery of a dark secret that he believes will lead him to the family he is looking for. Trouble is, someone else is looking for the same answers and will stop at nothing to find them.
Group Reviews/Comments:
Our group is no longer using a standard rating system. Each member gives comments and using whatever rating system they want! Usually I sort by Like/Didn’t Like but most of the reviews for this book were equivalent to “thumbs in the middle.” So no particular order below.
Mostly annoyed during the whole book. A lot of the plot seemed so ridiculous. Hated at the end when he helped save Amy—the slow clap was corny.
I really liked this book. Yes, some of the things that happened were stupid and obvious. It followed a lot of the same pattern of mystery shows. The characters do stupid things—that didn’t bother me. It was pretty suspenseful. The changing time periods was confusing. But the further it got the more it tied together.
I found the main character really annoying at the beginning. At the end he was still annoying but he was heroic in really dumb ways. Pacing did build with climatic resolution. I was entertained but probably won’t read the next one.
Hard to get into, especially the time period change. More thumbs down than thumbs up.
Thumbs in the middle—Tayte was a whiny character. I liked the solution of the older mystery.
Thumbs in the middle. I wish that someone else had written it. I loved the genealogy part, but the character development was poor. Liked the sense of place in Cornwall.
Thumbs in the middle. It’s kind of all over the place.
Meh. Thumbs in the middle trending down. Kind of excited that it was about a genealogist. But didn’t get the passion of genealogy from this book. Not very realistic. Willing to look past that—especially when it’s an amateur. But this was very generic.
I struggled in the beginning but I was able to finish this. Slow start. Mild thumbs up. I did like the ending. I liked how the mystery of the family played out. But the main character insufferable. But I was entertained.
Book not well written but I was ok with it because I like genealogy. And I like how the past and the present are entwined.
I liked the genealogy too, and I thought it was an interesting solution. All and all I thought it was ok.
Its so hard to come up with something new, and the genealogy was new. But the character was really unrealistic.
