I liked the plot and story. There were some surprises. I liked the detours. The book was a bit racist. I liked how it related to the immigration issues of today. Very interesting history of Barker character. I stayed up late to finish!
I got through it so quickly! Interesting scenery, places/neighborhoods. Lots of “characters;” everyone was interesting. Mirrored immigration issues of today.
I like a book that gives you a sense of history. Character development was so well done. The mystery did lag a bit in the middle.
At first I thought it was just another Sherlock Holmes type book, but I ended up really liking it. Barker was kind as well as a good investigator.
Loved Barker and Llewelyn relationship. It was a much warmer relationship that Holmes and Watson. A good mystery.
The author really did good research into history. I wish there was a better sense of place. I didn’t feel the immensity of the city. Llewellyn and Barker are surprisingly unprejudiced. It makes sense with Barker but not so much with Llewellyn.
I don’t usually like Victorian England stories so that fact that I liked it is high praise. I loved the cook and the butler characters. They were nicely interwoven in the story and would like to see more of them. I was very interested in the Jewish culture.
I am also not a Victorian England or Holmes fan, so I was pleasantly surprised. I liked the humor in it. Thomas was funny!
Nice sense of place and history. I liked the mentions of literature and how it fits with story. Loved the wit, humor, sarcasm. Liked the sub-characters, even the brief appearances were so well done. The mystery lagged a bit but I didn’t guess who it was!
I found it to be remarkably “woke”–very refreshing that Barker met our modern sensibilities although seems quite classist oddly.
I liked how classical references were woven in and well integrated because of Thomas’ background.
I enjoyed the book and exploration of Jewish culture.
Are we really seeing how a private investigator really acted? Realistic that he was so non-prejudice?
Such a copy of Sherlock Holmes. Didn’t like this.
Enjoyed the plot and liked the ending–didn’t see it coming!
I really liked this book, surprised how much I liked it! I was worried it would be too much like Sherlock Holmes. I liked how Barker talked about London. I liked the setting and Llewelyn a fun character.
I really enjoyed it! Not like Sherlock to me because Barker was giving and warm and Holmes was not.
Writing was too thin for me.
Dull. Couldn’t finish it. Read as if a student of Jewish history in England decided to write a mystery as their dissertation.
