Good story. Writing well done. Got tired of the interruption of the story from the past. I was surprised by who did it!
Peter May is an awesome storyteller. The modern mystery was solid. The historical stuff was also interesting.
I love Peter May’s writing. Even if the story was terrible I’d probably still enjoy reading his writing! The investigating team wasn’t well written–seems they disappeared. Too may breaks to the past story.
I feel May’s motivation was to write about the past.
I struggled with bouncing back and forth in the timeline. Felt more like a romance novel than a mystery. By the end I didn’t care who dunnit.
Writing is compelling but not enough to keep reading. The stories (past and present) felt like two separate stories and was just too much for one book.
Neither past or present plot was gripping at first but it got better and I became more interested. His writing about the landscape is marvelous.
I did not suspect who did it! The reveal didn’t show much of a motive. I am tired of detectives with personal demons. Just detect!
Brilliant writer but I struggled because he wasn’t meeting my expectations. Loved how he dipped into the past. Got very involved in family emotions at the end. The insomnia part was too much!
The modern mystery was lacking. History was interesting but not in a mystery novel.
Strong, beautiful prose about landscape. But much of the story felt like unnecessary filler. If it was classified as historic fiction I’d rate it higher, but as mystery fiction it was mediocre.
