I really enjoyed this book! But there was no mystery.

I do think there was a tiny mystery, but there was no detection.

I liked how Rebecca would speak and make the situation worse! I liked her.

Well written. I liked how the past and the present was interwoven.

Not about crime at all but about history and relationships.

Not a mystery, a family novel.

Not good writing. Characters were flat. The diary part was boring and unnecessary. Droned on about the back story; didn’t add anything. So much was unconvincing about motivation of characters. No sense of place.

I liked the writing it was easy to read.

Wrapped up so perfectly at the end–happy families-not realistic.

I kind of liked the writing about the mother; the book was well written.

The Jimmy character-made out to be so evil! But, not substantiated.

I agree that it was never really explained why Jimmy as such a bad boy, just that he was “like his grandfather.”

I liked the bride component/diaries.

Rebecca–cold and snobby–didn’t like her at first but grew on me, she got better and learned to tolerate people.

Hostage scene was well written.

I loved this book, I liked the diaries and the history.

The ending was inappropriate and ridiculous.

Not much mystery.

I really liked it. Definitely a “cozy.” Not much mystery.

Too much family stuff–but not enough information, we were left hanging.

Really liked the diaries.

Rebecca was a really successful woman but she was very unlikeable–I didn’t like that contradiction and that a strong woman was unlikeable.

I didn’t like this book. Not a mystery, just a family story. SLOW. But I did like the diary part.

The vigilante men made no sense.

I agree that the book has a lot of flaws, but I really enjoyed reading it. I liked Rebecca; I don’t remember seeing a character like her before. I really liked the dog! I liked the war bride story.

I think it was a mystery, but it failed as a mystery.

I liked it a lot, had a hard time putting it down. Yes, a failed mystery but still a mystery!

Slow at first and very depressing. Rebecca is still grieving her husband and now the mother is dead–I found the mother’s back story interesting but not necessary. Very sad.

Enjoyed reading certain parts: liked how the different family members developed their own coping mechanisms based on the abuse experienced. I didn’t like how judgmental Rebecca and the author was. The tertiary female characters were weak/stupid to bolster up Rebecca’s strength.

I really liked the book and the past/present altering. The actual murder was unnecessary for the story. The death that mattered was the mother. I would have liked to know how the parents “found” each other.

I had no desire to pick this up again after putting it down.
